HEADMASTER/HEADMISTRESS AND HEADS OF HOUSES

HEADMASTER/HEADMISTRESS

Requirements: Must have been a Deputy Headmaster/Mistress for at least five years, a Head of House for at least five years (separately or simultaneously), and a professor for a total of fifteen years, encompassing both of these roles. Must show excellent leadership and diplomacy skills. Not permitted to teach and hold the position of Headmaster/Headmistress. Very high level of character activity.

Responsibilities: All official school duties, including attending meetings of the Board of Governors. The care, protection and discipline of all students, and the deciding vote in such matters where a conclusion cannot be reached. The Headmaster/Headmistress may complete research or further study alongside his position, and may belong to organisations outside of Hogwarts, but may not hold any occupation other than that of Headmaster/Headmistress.


DEPUTY HEADMASTER/HEADMISTRESS

Requirements: Must have been a Head of House (either previously or simultaneously). Must show excellent leadership and diplomacy skills. Must teach a subject within Hogwarts, and have been a professor for at least ten years prior to this appointment (must have been a Head of House for five years). High level of character activity.

Responsibilities: Supporting the Headmaster/Headmistress in all official duties within the school. The care, protection and discipline of all students. The Hogwarts Quidditch League (schedule of matches and appointment of Commentator).


HEAD OF HOUSE

Requirements: Must have been a member of the House which they wish to lead. Must show excellent leadership and diplomacy skills. Must teach a subject within Hogwarts, and have been a professor for at least five years prior to their appointment. High level of character activity.

Responsibilities: The care and protection of the House which they lead. The discipline of their students, including expulsion. The house Quidditch team, including scheduling practices and forming teams. Advising students regarding their plans for the future, specifically in their fifth year.

PROFESSORS

Requirements: Must have achieved Exceeds Expectations or Outstanding in their subject at both OWL and NEWT level. Must show sufficient teaching skills. Must follow a class schedule. High level of character activity.

Responsibilities: The adequate provision of information and resources for all students under their tuition. Discipline of students, limited to the giving and taking of house points and the assignment of detentions. The assignment of permission slips to use the restricted section when necessary. High level of character activity.


SUBJECTS

ALCHEMY : An optional subject taught to sixth and seventh years concerning the ancient science of Alchemy, the study of four basic substances, as well as the study of the transmutation of substances.

ANCIENT RUNES : An elective course that can be taken by third year students and up. It is a mostly theoretical subject that concerns the study of runic scriptures.

ANCIENT STUDIES : An extra-curricular (non-compulsory) subject, focusing on the origins of magic and spells, encompassing all of time. 

ARITHMANCY : An elective course that can be taken by third year students and up. It is a mostly theoretical subject that concerns the prediction of the future using numbers with the addition of numerology. 

ASTRONOMY : A compulsory subject, it is the study of stars and planets.

CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES : An elective course that can be taken by third year students and up in which they learn about a wide variety of magical creatures and their natural habits and habitats. 

CHARMS : A compulsory subject, it is the study of the bulk of magical content, i.e. charm work.

DEFENCE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS : A compulsory subject, it is the theory and practice of how to protect oneself from dark magic and creatures.

DIVINATION : An elective course that can be taken by third year students and up. It involves the methods of divining the future.

FLYING : A compulsory course for first years only, teaching the basics of how to fly a broom. Also used to determine future Quidditch talent.

GHOUL STUDIES : An extra-curricular (non-compulsory) subject studying ghouls, ghosts and poltergeists, and the theories surrounding them.

HERBOLOGY :  A compulsory subject, it is the study of magical plants, herbs and fungi, how to care for them, and their uses.

HISTORY OF MAGIC : A compulsory subject, it is the study of international magical history.

MAGICAL THEORY : A compulsory course for first years only, covering magic from a purely theoretical standpoint, including how spells work.

MUGGLE STUDIES : An elective course that can be taken by third year students and up. It involves the study of muggles and their lifestyles.

POTIONS : A compulsory subject, it covers the theory and practical sides of potion making, as well as the understanding of how ingredients affect one another.

TRANSFIGURATION : A compulsory subject, it covers the theory and practical sides of turning objects into something else. In later years, there is also the opportunity to study to become an animagus for very advanced students.

OTHER

KEEPER OF KEYS AND GROUNDS

Responsibilities: Keeper of the keys. Escorting first year students by boat to the castle. Tending the gardens. Performing special tasks for the Headmaster/Headmistress and Professors at the school. Taking care of magical creatures on school grounds. Bringing the twelve trees into the castle at Christmas. Defrosting the school brooms during Winter. Growing pumpkins.


CARETAKER

Responsibilities: Enforcing hygiene in the school and upon students. Patrolling corridors out of hours in search for students out of bed. Making reports of all occurrences and keeping student files and records of punishment. 


LIBRARIAN

Responsibilities: Monitoring the library and study hall. Protecting the books. Controlling the withdrawal and return of books and the punishments for late returns. 


HOSPITAL WING MATRON

Responsibilities: Monitoring health at Hogwarts. Healing the wounded. Making and administering health potions and ointments (although may receive some help front the Potions Master).
