Faith was in shock from everything that had happened in the last ten minutes that she could barely think straight. She wasn’t entirely sure that she could have fended Joel off, especially after she had bitten him. He would have been extremely angry, and he might have even hit her. If it hadn’t been for Blake...well, she shuddered to think what might have happened. She had a vague idea that Joel would have done some serious damage, but she was now in denial mode. She had watched him beat Joel’s face to a pulp without even flinching, because she felt so cold toward him after he tried to force himself on her. Anyone that would disrespect her as a human being that way, deserved whatever her brother had in him to dole out as punishment.
She barely noticed that Joel ran out, his face bloody and broken. Her face was cool as stone, only a small twitch in her bottom lip betraying a hint of the shock she was experiencing. She didn’t even answer his question, she just moved forward as if on an invisible string, pulling her to move when she didn’t quite have the will to do it herself. She went to him and immediately took his hand in hers, examining the injuries on his knuckles. When she spoke, her voice took on a clipped tone, once again masking the shock she was feeling, or perhaps exhibiting it more fully than if she had broken down in tears. And it wasn’t like she wasn’t close. If she didn’t pretend that nothing was wrong right now, she would be a ball of emotions, and she would not allow herself to feel anything right now for fear of breaking down beyond repair.
“We have to get this bandaged up. I don’t know how I am at healing charms, I only remember the spells from the books.”
Her hands shook as she held his hand, and she forced her gaze down, because if she looked at him, the guilt and embarrassment would flood her being. She had brought Joel here to push her brother, she had practically begged him to misuse her this way, and she had only been trying to anger Blake. She felt so stupid, like an immature child. She almost felt like she would have deserved any mistreatment because she had been such a ridiculous brat. What Blake must think of her...it broke her heart to even comprehend it.
